According to figures from Hitwise visits to music download sites, such as Apple’s iTunes Music Store, saw a 50 per cent increase between December 24 and 25. Hitwise also found that visits to download sites were 15 per cent higher than last Christmas. Music, the perfect gift!

Laura Barton from the UK newspaper The Guardian suggests that 2005 marked the beginning of the end of traditional band marketing. According to her the hottsest bands are now creating their marketing campaigns online by distributing free MP3’s. 2005 was the beginning, 2006 will be the year of copyleft music.

According to Nielsen SoundScan, sales of music CDs in the US are down almost 7% from 2004. Album sales in 2004 totaled 480.6 mln; sales through October 2005 reached 446.9 mln.
