Anti-DRM protest part 2

FreeCulture @ NYU.org did it again! The second protest against DRM was held last wednesday 30/11/2005 in New York. Inspired by the latest Sony tragedy they handed out flyers to make con,sumers aware of the DRM situation.

Thanks to everyone who came out for our second DRM demonstration! Richard Stallman and his friends from NYFairUse joined us. RMS donned the sacred-sandwich board, we witnessed a domestic disturbance, handed out over 700 flyers, met many interested and shocked consumers and only got a little cold.

You have to give thes guys some credit for standing in the cold alone! Keep on promoting the free culture such as copyleft music!

But a critical note hase to be made: DRM is more then what they are protesting against. DRM is getting such a bad name that Microsoft is scared to use the naming in their office products. DRM is also making sure people who create content can specify that their video is not for everyone to see. It allows controlling and monitoring of access to files but most of all it also includes the upcoming tools for right management that will allow consiumers such as myself to ask f.e. Google to give me everything they know about me and ask them to delete it. That is the real future of DRM, not the machine wrecking code that is now on Sony CD’s!

Watermarking the new DRM?

This week I visited the Fruitytech company. It was a very nice meeting and they showed us some of their new protection schemes: Watermarking. A watermark is something you add to a music piece f.e. an MP3 so afterwards you can always find out who bought or created the copyright MP3. You can not hear the changes but sophisticated programs can ‘hear’ this watermark and translate it: who bought what and where. It is less restricting then DRM as in no restrictions at all and it doesn’t treat customers as criminals. This might be the solution for legal downloading of copyright music. Including a watermark in copyleft music, which is free to download, could help authors protect their rights as a creator! Watermarks, future of copyright music?

15% of European Internet users download illegal music, 5% buy it in legal online copyright music stores

JupiterResearch says that European consumers who download music from illegal file sharing networks (Kazaa , Soulseek) currently outnumber those downloading from legal services such as Apple’s iTunes Music Store by a factor of three to one: 15% file share while just 5% pay to download. There is solid demand for paid copyright music downloads, however, 10% of European consumers are willing to pay, rising as high as 31% in Sweden. File sharing penetration in Europe is highest among younger consumers (34% of 15-24 year olds) and is impacting the way they value music with many having little concept of music as a paid commodity. Again nothing was said about the legal download of copyleft music.

DRM to boast copyright music sales

In a recent study published by RNCOS, Digital Rights Management-An Industry Outlook (2005-2008) analysts expect that the legal copyright music industry will flurish during the next years. In the US and Europe, the size of the DRM enabled online music market was expected to reach a revenue earning of about $2.18 billion in 2008 from $275 million in 2004. In Western Europe alone the online music market is expected to grow to $656 million in 2008 from $124 million in 2005, the growth being five times in the next three years.

Can DRM damage your sales?

During the DRM-saga of Sony people where saying that they wouldn’t buy records from Sony anymore. But to they realy stop buying records. Here is a proof: after the announced boycott of all Sony CD’s the Get Right with the Man CD by Van Zant sales crashed. Get Right with the Man was ranked 887 before plummeting to position 25,802. Comments such as “BEWARE – COPY PROTECTION CONTAINS TROJAN THAT COULD CRIPPLE YOUR COMPUTER” is probably not what the artist want if as review. Today it has recoved a bit (5,511). But nevertheless the music industry keeps on promoting their DRM solutions.

UK inquiry into DRM and the law

The All Party Parliamentary Internet Group (APIG) is to hold a public inquiry into the issues surrounding Digital Rights Management (DRM), including the degree of protection needed for both copyright holders and consumers.
The inquiry will focus on:

Whether DRM distorts traditional tradeoffs in copyright law;
Whether new types of content sharing license (such as Creative Commons or Copyleft) need legislation changes to be effective;
How copyright deposit libraries should deal with DRM issues;
How consumers should be protected when DRM systems are discontinued;
To what extent DRM systems should be forced to make exceptions for the partially sighted and people with other disabilities;
What legal protections DRM systems should have from those who wish to circumvent them;
Whether DRM systems can have unintended consequences on computer functionality;
The role of the UK Parliament in influencing the global agenda for this type of technical issue.
